Not By Works

“Human history is the long and terrible story of man trying to find something other than God, which will make him happy.”  -C. S. Lewis

The book of Galatians is written to a group of people who have forgotten how to Be Free in Christ.

They forgotten the primary reason Jesus came was to Rescue.

Rescue people from the, “long and terrible story” we are trapped in. The story of trying to find freedom in someone or something other than Jesus.

The scene of Galatians Chapter 2 is a dark one.

In fact, Galatians 2:11-21 is at the same time one of the darkest moments and brightest moments in the New Testament. Take a look at it here

“This is like American Revolutionaries' proclaiming freedom and then enslaving Africans. The actions do not match the declaration.” - Dr. Tony Evans

Racism and Fear had entered into the Antioch church through the apostle Peter and his fellow Jewish visitors. And both were contagious.

Essentially, the Jews were declaring their superiority over the Gentiles. They were saying, "In order to be like Christ, you need to first be like us."

If we’re not careful, we can do the same.

In this context, Paul gives one of the greatest explanations of the Gospel in all of the Bible.
Galatians 2:16-21

I’ll summarize Paul’s explanation with this simple Gospel Equation:

Jesus  +  Something  = Nothing

(But)

Jesus  +  Nothing   =  Everything

It is Not By Works we are saved.
It is by the completed work of Jesus for us.
